Seven days centred on Kyoto opens up Kansai. You get all the city's major and many minor sites, two day trips, an overnight in Osaka or Kibune, and crucially the time to revisit one neighbourhood you fell in love with on Day 2. This itinerary assumes Kyoto as the base for 5 nights with one night in Osaka and one floating.
Best for: Slow-travel cultural-immersion trips, photographers, foodies Recommended base: Kyoto (5 nights), Osaka (1 night), Kyoto or Kibune (1 night)
Bamboo grove, Tenryu-ji, Saga-Toriimoto, Adashino, Hozugawa boat ride. Kibune optional overnight at a riverside ryokan.
Day 4 — Nara day trip
Todai-ji, Kasuga Taisha, Nara Park, Naramachi. Return to Kyoto in evening.
Day 5 — Uji + Fushimi Inari
Morning Fushimi Inari full climb. Train to Uji for Byodo-in and tea ceremony. Tea-tasting at Tsuen-cha-ya (since 1160 — Japan's oldest tea house).
Day 6 — Osaka
Train to Osaka (15 min). Osaka Castle, Dotonbori, Kuromon Market, Shinsekai for kushikatsu dinner. Overnight in Osaka.
Day 7 — Buffer + departure
Either back to Kyoto for a final neighbourhood you missed, or onward via shinkansen.
Practical tips
Day 6 in Osaka pairs naturally with a Universal Studios Japan day if travelling with kids or Harry Potter / Mario fans — book USJ tickets weeks ahead.
Kibune ryokan with kaiseki served on platforms over the river (kawadoko) is a summer-only experience (May-Sept). Off-season alternative: Hanare in Arashiyama.
The JR Kansai Wide Pass (5-day, ¥12,000) covers Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Himeji and is worth it if including Himeji Castle.
Eat okonomiyaki and takoyaki specifically in Osaka — Kyoto versions are inferior. Mizuno in Dotonbori for okonomiyaki, Wanaka for takoyaki.
Schedule one rest morning (sleep in, late breakfast, slow walk in one neighbourhood). Seven days without one is exhausting and you stop noticing things.
Build a custom version
This is a generic plan that works for most travellers. Use Panor's AI Japan trip planner to customise it — adjust pace, add or remove neighbourhoods, swap day trips, account for dietary restrictions, or factor in cherry-blossom or autumn-foliage timing. The planner uses interactive maps and can export the itinerary to your phone.
