Day 1 — Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi, Kuromon, Castle
Same as 3-day Day 1 but unhurried. Add a slow lunch at the Kuromon Market food stalls and an evening at the canal-side bars.
Five days based in Osaka covers the city, all the day-trip-able Kansai destinations, and gives you an actual chance at Kobe beef and a real Himeji Castle visit. The trade-off versus Kyoto-based: Osaka has cheaper hotels, denser nightlife, and more time-flexible food culture.

Kitano-cho morning, Sannomiya shopping, Kobe beef teppanyaki lunch, Meriken Park and harbour walk, Mt. Rokko ropeway and sunset view from the top. Return to Osaka for dinner.
Shinkansen to Himeji (45 min). Full day at Himeji Castle and Koko-en garden. Lunch at a local-only ramen shop near the castle (avoid the tourist row directly in front). Optional return via Kobe for a second food stop. Return to Osaka.
Nara as a full day from Osaka — 35 min by JR. Todai-ji, Kasuga Taisha, Nara Park, Naramachi. Sometimes paired with Horyu-ji (Japan's oldest wooden buildings, 30 min outside Nara town).
Either: train to Kyoto (15 min) for a Fushimi Inari + Gion compressed half-day; or USJ if Mario/Harry Potter is the priority. Return to Osaka for departure.
